Around 1900, Schöneweide became known far beyond the Berlin area as an industrial site and modern “electropolis”. Together with the industrial plants, a residential area was created in which typical neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau forms of the time have been preserved. The later residential buildings were oriented toward reform architecture with spacious courtyards and gardens.
With its dynamic design, the local housing development of the 1920s is one of the outstanding testimonies of modernism in southeast Berlin. In the 60s, further settlements of the type Q3A (cross-wall type No.3) were added – an example of the early industrial construction of the GDR.
